JERSEY SERVES UP A FESTIVAL OF SQUASH |
Ferndown Squash Club entered the Jersey Squash Festival with a strong squad of Dave Nethercott, Simon Jennings, Martin Edmonds, Nic Lewis and Mike Ypes our overseas player. This was a tough weekend of squash, eating , and drinking and of course meeting old friends and making new ones. We were playing for the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation so every point lost went to a good cause, we have raised over £100 pounds so far. The first match against Chelmsford Vets promised to be a cracker, the difficult courts with slippery walls provided some very entertaining rallies. The big match featured Nic Lewis taking on Geoffrey (Bungle) Went , Nic was just too strong for his opponent throughout covering the court with grace and speed(all the hours playing racketball were finally paying off) . Ferndown ran out convincing winners 4-1.
A 9.00am game on the Saturday morning against the Jersey Junior Academy (11-16 year olds) meant an early night, these juniors were worthy opponents and in a couple of years will be great players. The age gap was biggest at number 5 Mike Ypes at 65 playing an 11 year old, Mike finally succumbed to the young energetic lad 3-1. Ferndown were strong in all of the other games winning 4-1.
The Saturday afternoon game decided who would play in the finals on Sunday, things started positively with Martin Edmonds winning a tactical battle 3-0, unfortunately the rest of the team could not match Martin’s performance the match was lost 4-1. This team went on to win the league winning the final 5-0.
The MVP award went to Martin Edmonds P3 W3 L0 and Saturday night superstar. The LVP award went to Mike Ypes P3 W0 L3 Your Man on the Island- Nick Master. |
